Two of my favourite expressions sometimes feel as though they are in conflict with one another:
- Don’t let perfect be the enemy of good enough.
- Perfect practice makes perfect AKA if it’s worth doing, it’s worth doing right.
These conflicts manifest themselves in ways that are sometimes amusing and other times frustrating. For example, I have wasted a considerable amount of time trying to write the perfect blog posts, which has ultimately delayed the launch of this website. Absolutely time to remember that I should not let perfection be the enemy of good enough. Just get the thing launched already! Since you’re reading this, mission accomplished.
In a second scenario I need to make some face masks and I could just do the quickie method as seen on TV but is it enough protection? I have the material and skills to make a better mask so time to get to work and do it. Don’t be lazy, be as safe as you can.
Here are some reminders of when it’s okay to just stop and let it be good enough:
- Yard Work
- House Cleaning
- Table Setting
- Ironing
- Chopping Onions
- Group Photos
Stick to perfect practice on these ones:
- Kettlebell Swing
- Squat
- Cleaning your Instant Pot
- Calling your family
- Brushing and Flossing
And for me these are where perfection seems to be inherently present:
- The first sip of any cocktail my husband crafts
- My nephews laughter
- Dogwood blossoms
- Three miles into a run
I hope you’re finding perfect moments around you, creating some for others, and not letting the pursuit of it interfere with happiness!
